Weaving Studio
The A-Z West Weaving Studio is utilized for the production of A-Z West Works as well as used by both local community members and outside weavers who are invited to visit and share tips and skills. We also have Work–Trade and Self-Structured residents who use the Studio during their stay.
The Studio has 3 AVL production looms (48,” 60,” and a 60” dobby), a Glimakra table loom, two 40” Gilmore floor looms (four shaft and eight shaft), and a tapestry loom. There are also two sewing machines and one serger. Most of our looms have both sectional and plain warp beams, and we have both a spool rack and an AVL warping wheel for winding onto the sectional beams.
The Weaving Studio program provides fee-based, artist-led workshops for both beginning and experienced weavers.
Introduction to Weaving on a 4-harness loom
Mon-Fri 4:30-7pm OR Sat–Sun 10am-5pm
$550.00, Material & Equipment Included
This lesson is an introduction to loom technology, weaving theory, and basic weave structures such as tabby, twill, and basketweave. We will wind a warp, dress the loom, weave, and finish the ends before you go home. Weaving focus is on correct tensioning and beat, and maintaining even selvedges. This class is available for those new to weaving as well as those who have some experience weaving but would like a refresher.
Open Workshop on a 4-harness or 8-harness loom
Mon-Wed 5-7pm OR Sat 10am-5pm
$290.00, Equipment Included, Weaver to provide their own material
Weavers looking for a general technique refresher may review the weaving process with guided instruction. More experienced weavers may use this workshop to prep for more complex pieces outside of a regular course. This class is a great way to build upon the techniques learned in Intro to Weaving or to get a little support in your independent work.
